A Day in Bayeux

DSC_0999

After attending the wedding of friends of ours in Loudéac, a charming little town in the heart of Brittany, we ventured on towards Normandy and checked into a stunning privately owned chateau. One of the towns I was most looking forward to visiting in the area was Bayeux. It was a center of Medieval life in the region and features the staggeringly beautiful Norman-Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame. It was also one of the first towns liberated during the Battle of Normandy during WWII, so it’s quite rich in history. Another reason I was terribly excited to visit was because the town is also home to the Bayeux Tapestry. Depicting the Norman invasion of England and the Battle of Hastings, it is one of the most incredible and in-depth depictions of life in the Middle Ages. It’s not only considered one of the great European works of art but also one of the most important pieces that make up France’s cultural patrimony. Darling Husband quite lovingly is always up to take me to every museum, large or small, and keep me company as I read every description, plaque, and sign that I come across. I know, I’m a dork. But at least I was a well dressed dork for our day in Bayeux!
